The Riad - Background Dar Anika was built by the current owners between 2003 and 2005; the first new riad in the Medina of Marrakech for 50 years. The design objective was to incorporate all the best design aspects of an old courtyard riad with up to date wiring, plumbing, heated swimming pool and wi-fi internet connection. Location is everything and the riad is almost unique in having vehicular access right to the front door - but there the road ends so the noise outside is that of the Souq and the noise inside.... there is no noise inside - only the sounds of a fountain and the clink of mint tea being poured. There are 9 rooms and one suite, all differently sized and decorated. All rooms are air-conditioned and have direct dial telephones and wi-fi internet connection. None have TV’s or sound systems to preserve the peace of the experience. The ground floor centres on the exquisite 'marble carpet' central courtyard. Off the courtyard are the swimming pool (heated - a rarity for Marrakech) and hammam. The traditional salon is separated by picture windows allowing for air-conditioned cool in summer and a fire blazing in winter. There is a breakfast (and sundowner) terrace on the first floor. The roof terrace has tables for breakfast, lunch and dinner, sun beds and a splendid 'Arabian Nights' tent for lounging in the shade during the day and dining or a late drink in the evenings. In the evening the whole riad is lit up with candles and on colder nights braziers are lit on the terrace.
